O’Neill writes:

“[…]who would question the antiquity of a jig so generally known as ‘The Rakes of Kildare?’ Yet when compared with ‘Get Up Early’, an ancient march melody which Bunting obtained in 1802 from R. Stanton at Westport, county of Mayo, it is plainly evident that the march is the parent tune. ‘Very ancient author and date unknown,’ is Bunting’s notation on the latter.”2
